Crappie Slaying on Oologah: A Guided Fishing Masterclass with Slabbin Mike
Ah, what a day we had out on Oologah Lake! As the guide for Slabbin Mike's Crappie Fishing and Guide Service, I was excited to take Darin out for our 5-Hour Personalized On-Boat Lessons to Fine-Tune Your Skills Like a Pro! May is a prime time for crappie fishing on Oologah, with the fish becoming more active in the warming waters. We met up at the Hawthorn Bluff Campground & Fishing Area, a great launch spot on this beautiful lake.
The weather was a mix of partly cloudy skies, with some light rain clearing out later in the day. The water looked great, clear and inviting, perfect for targeting those white crappie. We started off jigging around some of my favorite spots, getting a feel for the lake and the techniques. It wasn't long before Darin's rod bent over, and he was into his first crappie of the day! We continued working the area, switching between jigging and a bit of light tackle trolling, and the action just kept heating up. I could tell Darin was getting the hang of it, reading the water and making those pinpoint casts to draw strikes.
As the rain cleared out, we really dialed in the bite, catching fish after fish. The white crappie were just smashing our baits, putting up great fights and filling the livewell. Darin was stoked, learning how to work those electronics and reading the fish finders to put us on the hot spots. Between the steady action and Darin's growing skills, it was an incredibly productive and fun day out on the water.
