Slabs, Bluegill, and Endless Action: A Crappie Angler's Dream Day on Oologah Lake
What a day we had out on Oologah Lake! As a veteran crappie fishing guide with Slabbin' Mike's Crappie Fishing and Guide Service, I was thrilled to take John Delaloye out for a half-day adventure targeting those tasty white crappie and feisty bluegill. April is prime time for crappie fishing here at Oologah, as the warming waters have the fish feeding aggressively.
We met up at the Spencer Creek Campground launch just after 8 AM, with partly cloudy skies and a chance of storms in the forecast. Not to worry though, the lake conditions were fantastic, and we were ready to take advantage. I rigged John up with the right bait and lures, then we set out to start working some of my proven crappie honey holes. It didn't take long before we were into them, with John quickly landing a nice white crappie on a small jig. The bite stayed steady, and he followed that up with a feisty bluegill that put up one heck of a fight on the light tackle.
Though the weather threatened to turn at times, we stayed on the fish, using a mix of jigging, trolling, and light tackle presentations to keep the action going. John was a quick learner, and I could tell he was having a blast reeling in those slabs and panfish. In between bites, we'd swap stories and talk fishing, and I was happy to share some of my best tips and techniques to help him become a more successful angler.
